Because I want to print my drawings in a local library and the library doesn't have Adobe Illustrator. Their computers only have Microsoft office app. and Adobe Reader etc.

A. Just got though designing a Valentine's Day card for my wife.

The "path" you make with the pen tool is one object. The drawing behind it is another. After you draw the path, use the select tool to select BOTH the path and the drawing. THEN make the mask.

Remember that even after the mask is made, they are STILL two separate objects. If you intend to move the image around, GROUP the two objects so that they move as one.

A. Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 is a web authoring program. It's used to create / build websites. You can work from the "design view" which will basically allow you to drag & drop items to your site or page. Or you can work from the "code view" which will require you to have some knowledge of html and whatever scripting language you choose. If you have never used this program before (or one like it) the learning curve is pretty high. However, we all have to start somewhere. There is a company called Total Training which sells tutorial DVD's for all of Adobe's products. Contact me if I can be of further assistance.

It would be a good idea to check the "Show Import Options" box. This will allow you to set the initial layer transparency within Indesign. You can always change these settings in Indesign by going to Object->Object Layer Options.

Whats the difference between Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 trail and Adobe Premiere 7 trial?

What type of adobe photoshop should an ametuer photographer buy?

Q. I want to buy photoshop for my computer, but there are so many different types of photoshop I don't know what to buy! I was planning on getting it on ebay cheap but some photoshops are a little too cheap. What are student versions and how do I know what is the best for me. Please help!

A. As a photographer also, Photoshop Elements is fine for editing and even improving on your digital images and scans. So if you want to stay at around $100 or less, get Elements 7, the latest. As with any of the Photoshop programs it will take some learning to become really good with it. You will find some excellent serires of courses online here: http://www.eclecticacademy.com/ BTW, buy and register Elements in legal fashion and when a later version comes out you will be able to get a $20 rebate. Does not apply to bundled software that comes with a hardware purchase.

If you are willing to spend in the $200+ range then Lightroom 2.0 is a very very good Photoshop program for the photographer.

Student versions -- must be enrolled in formal eductional institution and be able to prove it. Programs can be used legally as long as you are a student. Not for commercial purposes.

I bought CS2 and PS6 on Ebay and everything was fine. However, it was not cheap. I would also suspect the "too cheap" sales.

A. Adobe Indesign and Adobe Photoshop will work together nicely (especially CS3). They are just totally different programs used for different purposes. Photoshop is generally used for raster grapics/photos/effects; whereas Indesign is generally used for layout.

If you would like to use a Photoshop file within Indesign, then you need to

1. create a new document in Indesign (File->New)

2. Place the PSD into that document (File->Place)

3. with in the Place Document dialog box you'll have to navigate to the desired PSD file and select it, please note the two check boxes at the bottom of the dialog box. It would be a good idea to check the "Show Import Options" box. This will allow you to set the initial layer transparency within Indesign. You can always change these settings in Indesign by going to Object->Object Layer Options.

How difficult is Adobe Premiere Pro for a user to learn?

Q. I've mastered using Windows Movie Maker and I figured out how to use Sony Vegas decently well (not perfectly though). People have told me the learning curve is really steep for Adobe, but I assumed they meant that for people with no experience with video editing software? What do you think?

Most people start with entry-level apps like Movie Maker and on to something a little more advanced before moving on to a pro app. It helps to have previous basic experience with editing. Otherwise, it can be very daunting and makes no sense to do anyway. All video editing apps have the same basic structure. The difference is in the number and level of controls and capabilities of the program itself.

Yes. It's difficult but why would a pro-level app be easy? If editing and FX was easy, we'd all be in Hollywood or Pixar. However, it's learnable. Obviously. Millions of people around the world do it everyday. You just have to take the time to learn it properly and practice.

Adobe Photoshop: How to make a photo look like a Japanese woodblock print?

Q. I am working in Photoshop CS3 and would like to edit a photograph of mine to make it look like a Japanese woodblock print. This would probably involve creating a dark outline around the objects, and flattening planes to make them look more 2D. I'm also interested in trying to replicate the colours. Thanks!

A. There are 2 techniques you can probably use to do this.

You can also try the free Windows Movie Maker (or whatever it's called in whatever version of Windows you have). On a Mac, there's iMovie.

There are also programs that are free or open-source, but are still in development and might not work very well - VideoLAN Movie Creator (VLMC) and Lightworks.

Beyond that, you can look at lower-end programs like Corel/Ulead VideoStudio, Pinnacle Studio, and some entry-level versions of Sony Vegas.

Avid Studio is coming out as an available download on March 8th. Avid makes arguably the best editing platform in the business (Media Composer), and Studio will be a new thing for them in the lower, entry-level end. They'll definitely be worth a look.

Many companies also offer academic discounts! Here in the US, you have sites like specialtyvideosupply.com and journeyed.com - I don't know what similar sites you have in the Philippines, but look for them! Student discounts are often really great deals if you're a student or educator.
